Dog Breeders

by Filed under Pet News

We can’t say it often enough - many animals are waiting in shelters and private shelters to be adopted. It’s is understandable though that some people want to have a pure-bred animal for various reasons.

If you decide to buy a pure-bred animal, don’t buy from pet shops! This is the worst thing you can do. A responsible breeder will show you the puppy’s parents, their pedigree, their peers, brothers and sisters. By looking at how the animals are acommodated, cared for, what places are provided to play, how they interact with each other, you will get a good idea how your puppy - most likely - will turn out.

Dont buy from “puppy-mills”, or the so called “backyard-breeders”. Make sure the animal has the basic shots and a clean bill of health. And if you are willing to spend quite a bit of money for your pure-bred dog, make sure you get the necessary papers for an AKF certification.

Many breeders have websites and display pictures of their litter, at various stages of their lives. Make an appointment with the breeder - and take your time. Don’t just rush in, pick a puppy and drive home. Ask the breeder if you can play with them and/or watch the litter for some time.

When you have chosen an animal and got all the papers don’t forget to ask the breeder about the food the animal is used to. Most breeders will give you some to take home with. Don’t change the brand of food immediately, dogs are sensitive to abrupt food changes, puppies even more. You certainly don’t want to spend the first few days cleaning up after your puppy nonstop because it has diarrhea.

Puppies get carsick easily, be prepared and keep it in a carrier, or at least blanket if you have to drive home. (And have a spare blanket ready)
