Children and Pets

by Filed under Pet News

What children should NOT do:

  • Don’t stare at the dog — that means “I dare you to bite me!”
  • Don’t run, jump or wave your arms around.
  • Don’t scream.
  • Don’t throw anything at the dog or hit him.
  • If A Dog Bites You

If a child is bitten by a dog, or any animal:

  • See a doctor.
  • Wash the wound with soap and warm water.
  • Write down the type, size and color of the animal. Was it wearing a collar? Did it have any identification tags? Where were you when you were bitten? Where did the animal go?
  • Report all of this information to the animal control agency in your city or county.
  • Note: Never leave a small child unattended with a dog, not even the most playful and friendly one! Small children will consider this animal as a toy and don’t have the sensitivity yet to understand that poking into a dog’s eye, ear’s, pulling the tail, the legs, etc. might aggrivate the animal so it will defend himself. Also the size/height plays an important factor. Being at the same height as the dog, or below, playing with the dog on the floor, the dog easily will consider himself as “the leader”. Your dog needs to learn to respect your child as superior, but your child needs to learn to respect the dog and it’s feelings.
