Cats

Humans have always been fascinated by cats. Today cats are one of the most popular pets and fit perfectly into our lifestyle. Cats are easy to care for, beautiful und loveable pets.

About 4000 years ago the first cats where domesticated. Egyptians have been the first to use cats to control vermin and other pests and to protect stored food. They were the first to be known to keep cats. The cats was seen as a hunter and worshipped as gods and goddesses. At times the death penalty was imposed for killin cats. When buried, cats where also mummified.

Later the cat made it to Italy and spread from there slowly around Europe. With the pilgrims they arrived in the New World. Egyptians favord the short haired cats and it spread around the world, while the long haired felines came later from Iran and Turkey. Domestic cats have been found also in China, Japan and India.

By the 18th century cats had become very popular household pets, except for a short period in the middle ages where the cat was associated with the devil.

Wild cats, such as tigers and lions descended from early carnivores valled miacids. From there the more modern wild cat developed. The European wild cat, the African wild cat and the Asiatic desert cat. Because of its tabby markings it looks as if the domestic cat has evolved from the African wild cat.

Today’s cats still have many characteristics from their wild ancestors. The body shape, feeding and grooming habits and the eyes, along with the ability to pounce into action in a second and at any moment are the same. It looks as if these characteristics is making cats so fascinating around the world.

Non-pedigree domestic cats, the Moggie are the most popular house pets today. The black and white cat is leading, following by the black cat and then the Tabby cat. Around the world you can find 36 recognized breeds of cats. Most popular in pedigree cats is the Siamese cat. Almost every household that has pets keeps at least one cat.
