Puppy Mills

by Filed under Pet News

Last week we were confronted with another shocking report about puppy-mills, this time in WV. Almost 1,000 - yes ONETHOUSAND - dogs have been rescued from a puppy mill and are now waiting for a home. How many will make it until they are put to sleep? My personal guess is about 25 - 30%. That leaves about 700 dogs with no chance of ever becoming a beloved family member.

Though I understand that many people want a certain breed, and preferably a puppy, I also ask everyone to visit the shelters and rescue organizations first before they buy a dog. Many would be surprised that there is a great variety of purebreds available for adoption. And who knows, you might even fall in love with a mixed breed. Charm is not limited to a certain breed, nor is loyalty, eagerness to please and learn, and never ending love for the owner(s).

The only way to put these puppy mills out of business is if YOU DON’T BUY FROM THEM. And don’t think that if you buy a puppy from a pet shop, it could not be from a puppy mill. More likely than not, it will be from one. If you really can’t open your heart and adopt one of the thousands of animals waiting for a good home, at least buy from a reputable breeder and VISIT THEIR FACILITIES. Don’t ever “mailorder” a dog, unless you know the breeder’s reputation and you have talked with some of their customers.
