Dangerous Food for Dogs

by Filed under Pet News, Dogs - Dangerous Food

Eating Dangerous or Poisonous Objects/Food

Puppies, young dogs, and some adult dogs are orally oriented. Just like human babies, everything goes in their mouths! This may be a habit left over from teething. It may be a way of releasing tension. It can even be breed-related. For example, Retrievers naturally pick up and carry things in their mouths, Beagles tend to sniff out and eat everything that looks like food, etc. Whatever the reason, the problem begins when the item is swallowed.

The only safe bone for a dog to chew is hard rubber or pliable nylon! Giving your dog the bones of another animal to chew on is not a wise idea. Bones splinter and can lodge in the mouth, throat, or intestine.

Table scraps do not provide adequate nutrition and, therefore, should not be given to a dog. A little juice, left over from any dish, except poultry, can be poured over a high quality dog food.

Poultry juice is very difficult to digest.

Raw eggs should not be given to a dog because of the risk of salmonella poisoning.

Puppy Mills

by Filed under Pet News

How many will make it until they are put to sleep? My personal guess is about 25 - 30%. That leaves about 700 dogs with no chance of ever becoming a beloved family member.

Pets and Hurricane Gustav

by Filed under Pet News

We are thrilled that the authorities have learned from horrible mistakes made 3 years ago as Katrina hit the Gulf Coast! A study also found that 44 percent of those who stayed behind when Hurricane Katrina hit did so because they wouldn’t abandon their pets. Knowing that their pets are in safety will make the decision to leave so much easier in hard times such as these.

NEW ORLEANS–Authorities evacuating residents from New Orleans ahead of Hurricane Gustav are including four-legged friends after thousands of pets perished in Hurricane Katrina three years ago.

Animal welfare groups tried to make sure evacuees had their pets with them, while shelters away from the Gulf Coast accommodated animals this time around.

Many owners stayed in the city during the catastrophic 2005 hurricane because they could not take their pets to shelters and could not bear to leave them. Yesterday, Animal Rescue New Orleans provided boxes for residents to carry their small pets with them on buses and trains and owners lined up for machine-readable animal ID tags.
