Dogs and protecting your home.

by Filed under Pet News, Dogs - Guard dogs

If you only want a dog to protect your home, better get an alarm system. A dog is first and foremost a beloved and loving family member, with the addition of a voice. A voice that will announce visitors, strangers, and eventually keep intruders out.

It is a myth that large dogs are better guard dogs. A dog will become what you make of him. If he is loved, well cared for, respected, he will grow into a loving family pet regardless of his size. He will be protective of the family and guard it.

A dog that is neglected, abused or mistreated will turn either into a hazardous animal, even biting family members, or extremely submissive with all the disadvantages that come with it.

Looking for a “mean” bread dog to protect your home is the biggest mistake. Dogs are not barking or biting machines, they need love, care, attention, regular medical check-ups and lots of your time.

The best guard dog is a dog that is alert and barks when people come near, or enter your house. Every dog and I mean all of them, regardless of size, breed, age, needs to be trained. It is wonderful if your animal announces a visitor, it’s less desirable if he will bark endlessly and can’t be stopped, or even bites. Your mailman, meter-reader, UPS delivery guy, etc. will be thankful and you can avoid paying doctor bills or lawsuits. Also remember, a dog that has bitten once will most likely bite again.

Treat your dog as a beloved family member and your dog will watch out for you - regardless of size, shape, age or breed.
