Summer is here, what a wonderful time to enjoy the outdoors with your furry friend! Be aware though that the damaging UV-rays can also affect your dog. If your animal’s skin is fair, put some sunscreen on his ears and nose. Should your dog have a very pink nose, you might want to think about protecting it with a permanent tatoo. Please see our article about >>>Tattoos a substitute for pigments.
If you like to take walks on the beach, or your dog likes swimming in the ocean, make sure to rinse off the salt from the animal’s body and wash his face with a wet cloth. Salt can cause skin irritation. The same applies for swimming pools. The chlorine in the water can also cause skin irritation, even discoloration if your dog’s coat is very light.
In case your pooch is a little older take it easy with excercise and/or long walks during the hot summer months. Preferably walk him in the early morning and evening hours and avoid midday and early afternoon outings all together. That also applies for thick or long-haired, younger animals.
Remember that your animal “sweats” through his tongue, and always keep a fresh bottle of water handy, even during walks or on short trips in the car. At home, add a few ice cubes to the water bowl to keep it fresh and tasty.
Enjoy the season!
