Sometimes it takes “forever”..

by Filed under Pet News, Obedience Training

When our four-legged friends take forever to “go” ..

I dare to say that every animal owner has been in the situation when we are a little short on time or it’s very cold, but the dog takes forever to do his business. Especially male dogs are pretty good in testing the patience of their owners. They are capable of “portion control”, much more than females.

Sometimes our animals fools us and we think, o.k. that’s it, he does not really have to pee. Or, we get a little impatient and insist on going home to soon. The result? A reminder within a short time that Fido wants out again.

To speed up this potty-process you need to change YOUR behavior. It is common practice that many dog owners go right back into their home after the animal has relieved himself. The dog naturally realizes that and because he wants to have more outdoor time, he will hold back as much as possible to delay. As long as he gives signals that he is not “done” yet (peeing at every corner and tree in small quantities), it’s almost a guarantee that the owner will keep walking him.

Make it a rule to walk the animal for at least another 10 minutes AFTER the business is done. Your dog will pick up eventually that it is much more pleasure for him to walk without holding back the need to pee. Sooner or later he will relieve himself immediately and just enjoy the stroll with his owner.
