Skunk - what a smell!

by Filed under Pet News, Pet Grooming

A “SKUNK” got your dog?

Dogs do need a regular bath; they are digging, rolling in the grass, in the dirt, and not always smell like “roses”. If your dog is allowed outside, to play in nature on a large property, chances are that he will sooner or later meet a skunk.

Did you ever smell a skunk before? Even if not, you will be able to tell. The skunk scent is plain horrible, hard to compare with anything else. It fills our (human) noses, and now imagine how your dog with his much better sense of smell, might feel!

Below a few tips how to get rid of this excessive “bad air”:

  • Put on rubber gloves or latex gloves and prepare a bath OUTSIDE, not inside your home.
If not, your house will smell “skunk” for weeks!
  • Shampoo the animal 2 – 3 times and rinse thoroughly in-between.
  • Dry the dog’s fur.
  • Check on his eyes if the skunk hit him in his face also. The secret will not make him blind, but it is very painful for the animal. If you see any signs of skunk spray in the dog’s eyes, clean them with the same solution that is fit for human’s eyes.
  • Whenever the dog is completely dry, get a can – or two, depending on the size of the dog and thickness of the fur – of tomato juice and pour the juice over the dog. Rub it into his coat and leave it there for as long as your dog will accept it. The minimum is 30 minutes, but you can leave it on for hours if the animal is not objecting too much. Then rinse again.
  • There is no scientific explanation why tomato juice neutralizes skunk odor, but it does. Please be aware of that light haired or white dogs will run around a little discolored or even pink for some time. Don’t worry, it will fade and go away.
