Vaccinosis

by Filed under Pet News, Vaccinations

Vaccinosis can occur when an animal develops adversed effects from vaccinations. Especially the combined vaccines (several vaccinations in a single injection) are the most common cause for this disease.

About one in 10,000 cats develops a sarcoma, that is a tumor of connective tissue, within a few months of routing vaccinations. Most of these tumors appear at the site of the injection but can also appear at other locations. Most of the sarcomas seen are developing after rabies and Feline Leukemia Viurs (FeLV) shots.

A group of veterinary scientists has recommended to discontinue giving these combination shots. They are convenient, without doubt, but carry a greater risk of an animal developing the disease.

If your vet still practices combo shots, please do insist on single vaccinations that can be given within a one to two-week period.

In addition, please have a look if - especially your cat - really NEEDS all the vaccines that are contained in routine shots. For example, a cat that is NEVER outside, really does not need rabies shots (unless you travel with the animal). Some veterinarians are very understanding and will be happy to discuss the need and usefulness of certain vaccinations with you.

If not – change the vet!

Talking from my own experience: I had two cats that never came in any contact with other animals, nor have they ever been outdoors. My vet who knew both animals from the time I first got them, never prescribed rabies or other useless vaccinations. Unfortunately she moved to a different state and I had to look for a different veterinarian. I immediately got “blasted” for them not having rabies shots. My explanation why there was no need for it was totally disregarded and belittled. I turned around, found a better veterinarian and my cats STILL don’t get rabies shots.
