Urine Spots on Your Lawn

by Filed under Pet News, Saving Your Lawn

Dogs develop a liking for their “potty spots” and might uriniate on them all the time. Especially male dogs can make a lawn look really bad (yellow, brown spots) since they are “marking” their territory at several places. Female dogs are less likely to ruin the looks of your yard/lawn because they normally squat down to urinate and empty their bladder at once. Male dogs seem to be able to urinate 50+ times with no problems. Some are very territorial and feel the need to “mark” everywhere.

Besides teaching your dog to stay out of parts of your yard/backyard (see our article about Dogs and Digging you can do a few things to minimize urine spots and the discoloration of grass.

  • Water the areas immediately – that helps dissolve the acid in the urine so it won’t burn the grass.
  • Try Lawn Spot Away! - For Instant Lawn Color – a liquid that is applied to help speed up the break down of the enzymes contained in pet’s urine. This spray-on lproduct will turn yellow and brown spots green immediately.
  • Grass Saver by NaturVet – given to your dog daily, this natural food supplement helps diminish yellow lawn spots.
  • See product reviews for both items on Our Sistersite

Whatever you decide upon, please do keep in mind that spot marking is part of the dog’s natural behavior. Don’t punish your animal for it!
