Corneal Disease

The clear front part of the eye is called cornea. When light hits the eye it first collects on the cornea and then retina. Most diseases of the cornea are alterations in its transparency. It is a sensitive tissue saturated with nerves therefore injuries to cornea are very painful and accompanied by extreme sensitivity to light.

Ulcers may occur in the cornea due to trauma or irritation. Many ulcers occur spontaneously in middle-aged to older dogs that have an inherited defect. These ulcers are called Boxer-ulcer. The name comes from the frequency the Boxer breed suffers from this condition. Infections might occur additionally.

Ulcers can lead to blindness, depending on the size and depth.
