Pet Insurance – A Closer Look

by Filed under Pet News, Veterinarians - Insurance

Here is a little history and explanation why our animals are insured. We have 3 household pets, 2 cats and 1 small dog. A few years ago one 9-months old cat suffered from acute kidney failure, a very unusual disease for a cat that age.

Trying to save that cat required a 2 day hospital stay, x-rays, microsound, blood tests, urine tests, infusions, antibiotics, 24/7 monitoring, etc. and the bill was over $900.00. Unfortunately we could not save him, and had to agree to put him out of his misery. Since the vet insisted that this was a very unusual scenario for such a young animal to suffer from acute kidney failure we got worried that something in our household might have caused it and had the remaining animals tested. Luckily nothing was found, but again, these tests added another $400.00 to the already hefty bill. Would we have had insurance, we could have saved about 90% of the expenses.

After that costly and tragic incident we decided to get pet insurance. “Quick Care” has worked so far for us and, even neither one of our animals had major accidents, actually SAVED us money.

We have listed the average expense for most common accidents/treatments, just to give you an idea how costly it can become in case your animal, or one of your animals, needs emergency care or hospitalization and surgery.

  • Cancer treatments (dog)
    $3,600
  • Motor vehicle accident (dog)
    $3,200
  • Fractured leg (dog)
    $2,300
  • Ingestion of foreign body
    $1,200 (cat)
    $2,100 (dog)
  • Bladder stones (dog)
    $1,200
  • Infection (cat)
    $1,000

  • Pet Health Insurance for Cats & Dogs

Quick Care Insurance covers these costs with little or no deductible. The monthly rates range from under $10.00 up to $30.00, depending on breed, age and requested coverage. QuickCare allows you a vet of your choice, that means you don’t have to suddenly change veterinarian in case of an accident or a special treatment (does not apply for every insurance).

For example, QuickCare for Cats (outdoor) starts at less than $9/month and covers an unlimited number of selected accidents, up to $2,000 per accident. There is never a co-payment, a fixed deductible of $50.00 (except for accidental death – no deductible), no upper age limit, no waiting period, no maximum annual or lifetime benefits.

QuickCare for Cats (indoor) starts at $9.95 and includes treatment such as for UTI, cancer, asthma, etc. Deductibles vary. Other, more extensive services are offered in QuickCareGold plans).

QuickCare for Dogs also start at $9.95 and can be upgraded to QuickCareGold plans also.

QuickCare offers a special program for senior dogs. QuickCare Senior provides you with coverage for an unlimited number of accidents, up to $2,000 per accident, and coverage for illnesses common to senior pets, up to $2,000 per illness. Coverage includes the major illnesses suffered by older pets such as stroke, seizures, cancer and heart problems.

    QuickCare offers discounts, such as:

  • 10% for Multi pets. When a pet owner enrolls three or more pets, a discount of 10% on each of the policies is applied.
  • 10% for Medical Services Pets. When a pet is a registered medical service pet, such as, guide dog, therapy pet, a discount of 10% on each policy (with proof of registration).
  • 10% discount for an owner trained Medical Service Pet when owner provides a letter from your doctor indicating that the owner is disabled and requires a medical service pet.
  • 5% for microchipped pets registered in the 24PetWatch database.

  • Keep in mind that in an “unlucky” scenario your pet can have more than one accidents/illnesses a year. It’s definitely worth to pay these low monthly premiums to be able to afford treatment. Unfortunately many animals have to be put to sleep because the owners love them but simply cannot afford vet bills in the range of thousands of dollars!
