This is a bacterial infection that characteristically results in fever, depression and loss of appetite. Most animals experience extremely congested mucous membranes, if the liver is infected, jaundice can occur.
Kidney damage is not uncommon and will result in excessive thirst (drinking), vomiting, excessive urinating and dehydration.
This bacterial disease is more common lately in several locations across North America and is transmitted by the urine of infected animals.
Dogs should be vaccinated at an early age. Many Distemper/Pavovirus combo-vaccines also include Leptospirosis.
