The virus that causes Canine Distemper is closely related to the human measles virus. This disease is the most serious viral disease for dogs, all over the world.
About 50% of non-vaccinated dogs that are infected with this virus develop serious complications and about 90% of them die.
The virus is transmitted by all bodily secretions and is highly contagious. It is extremely airborne. Puppies fewer than 4 months of age are most to be affected.
Early signs of this virus are dehydration and diarrhea, followed by fever, vomiting and depression; Diarrhea will turn into bloody diarrhea, coughing, difficulty breathing, inflammations around eyes and nose, and nasal discharge.
Dogs that recover from distemper will be immunized but might experience life long complications. Vaccination at an early age is highly recommended. Annual booster shots are required.
