Albino Dogs

by Filed under Albino Dogs

Dogs, males and females, can carry the mutant gene that is responsible for Albinism. Even the gene cannot be detected, it is most likely that a litter from these animals will result in one or more Albinos. The more Albinos are bred together, the clearer the Albino characteristics come to show.

If you have a dog that has a very light tan colored coat, a pink nose, pink eye lids it is at least part Albino. We are by no means suggesting to get rid of this dog, but we are seriously asking not to use this dog for breeding.

Albinos have a deleterious mutation that will most likely, if not certainly, cause health issues.

  • Easily sunburned
  • Sensitivity to sunlight
  • Many will develop skin cancer and skin lesions due to the lack of pigment.
  • Some have a very unpredictable temperament and can be very unstable. From extreme shyness to fear biting or vicious attacks everything is possible. (This change in temperament is caused by inbreeding to obtain the mutation)
  • We do not recommend adopting these dogs if you have smaller kids in your family.

Certainly there are exceptions, but if you adopt an Albino puppy you cannot know how the dog develops.
These dogs are not recognized as breed by the DCPA since this mutation is considered a genetic defect.
