Acne - Dogs
Acne on dog shows on their chin, muzzle and lips. Many show bumps, scabs and the so-called blackheads. Not all dogs develop acne; Boxers, English Bulldogs, Doberman Pinchers and Great Danes are the breeds that are likely to develop acne.
Acne can be inherited, and it is advised not to breed dogs that have a tendency to this skin problem.
Acne does not usually bother an animal; chances are though that a secondary bacterial infection might develop. This infection then can cause itching and pain and your dog might rub its face along the carpet or paw at it. A dog general health is not affected by acne.
The vet can determine with a skin biopsy if the dog suffers from acne. Though there is no cure, acne can be controlled. Mild cases need no treatment at all, more severe cases with repeated infections require cleaning with acne products or mild anti-seborrheic shampoos. You vet will recommend the appropriate product.
If secondary infections develop your dog will need antibiotics for a few weeks.
Cats can have acne too, please read separate article in this category.
