Cats - Feeding

by Filed under Animals - Feeding

For cats more or less the same guidelines apply as for dogs - with one exception:

Even if you decide upon kibbles, don’t let cat food be available all day long. Remove the food bowls but keep water ready all the time.

I personally feed my cats in the morning and add a little more in late afternoon. With my first cat I could leave the bowl with kibbles out all day long, he did not go and snack all the time. After adding the second cat I had to change, especially after he was neutered. This cat got into the habit to go for snacks every two to three hours and gained too much weight.

He is back to the recommended weight now, but trust me, it was quite a battle and a nerve wrecking time with hours of meows and expressions of displeasure. For weeks that cat was literally mad at me and would not even let me touch him. He preferred to scratch me whenever I dared to lift him up. (I considered this as the grumpy diet period :) )

As for dogs - keep your cats weight at normal/average. Heavy cats tend to be lazy; it’s hard to get them to play. The heavier they are, they less they move.

When changing food brands, be even more careful with cats than with dogs. Buy a small amount of a different brand you want to switch to first, your cat might not like it! Cats are pickier than dogs; a change of food will upset them and their digestive system. You cannot be sure that your cat will like and eat what you bring home.
